Description
Benaras is also called Varanasi or Kashi. It is one of the oldest cities of the world which has been continuously inhabited. It has more than a three-thousand-year history. It is on the river Ganges. It is considered to be one of the sacred cities of India and occupies an important place in the religious geography of the country.
Ghats in Varanasi are river front steps leading to the banks of Ganges River. These Ghats have a mystic appeal. The city has eighty eight ghats. Chet Singh Ghat seen in this painting is just one of them. This “private” row boat took me around all the ghats in Varanasi and the boatman was keen on explaining the stories associated with each ghat.
