Description
Benaras is also called Varanasi or Kashi. It is one of the oldest cities of the world which has been continuously inhabited. It has more than a three-thousand-year history. It is on the river Ganges. It is considered to be one of the sacred cities of India and occupies an important place in the religious geography of the country.
Ghats in Varanasi are river front steps leading to the banks of Ganges River. These Ghats have a mystic appeal. The city has eighty eight ghats.
Rewa ghat was earlier called Leelaram ghat, named after the priest who constructed this ghat. In 1879, the King of Rewa purchased this and made sufficient repairs, after which it was known as Rewa ghat. The Rewa Kothi or Rewa palace is situated on the top of the stairs. In 1955, this palace was donated to Benaras Hindu University. The university has converted the palace and it now houses the hostel for students of Visual and Performing Arts.
It is said that the reason the space was provided to students is that the painting could be done in the early morning hours to capture the natural beauty that this ghat offers. Even today, it is not unusual to see students sketching, drawing, painting or even practising dance in the vicinity of the ghat.
