Description
This is the bell, at the entrance to Shankaracharya temple, dedicated to Shiva (one of the principal deities of Hinduism) in the heart of Srinagar. It is situated on top of Shankaracharya hill, some 1000 feet above the level of the city and is accessible by climbing 243 steps. From its location, the devotees can get a panoramic view of Srinagar city.
It is considered to be the oldest temple in Kashmir. It has been recorded by Kalhana, the great historian of Kashmir, in his epic work in Sanskrit - Rajtarangni. According to him, King Gopaditya built the temple on the hill as a shrine around 371 BCE.
The temple was visited by the saint Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and ever since it is associated with him and the temple and the hill came to be named after him. It is here that the famous literary work in Sanskrit “Soundarya Lahari” was composed by Adi Shankaracharya, expounding the union of Shiva and Shakti.
