Description
A few of us from the "Art Society of India" travelled to Jaisalmer for landscape painting en plein air.
Jaisalmer is a city in the north of India, in the state of Rajasthan. It is known as the "Golden city" because all of its architecture is made of yellow sandstone and all of them are exquisitely sculptured. It is situated in the heart of the Thar desert.
Haveli is a traditional mansion in India. Havelis were the elaborate homes of rich merchants, in the times gone by. Today, they have historical and architectural significance.
In Jaisalmer, there are havelis that are hundreds of years old. They are carved from yellow sandstone. Some of these have many floors and countless rooms, with decorated windows, archways, doors, and balconies.
Among the largest and the most elaborately carved havelis in Jaisalmer, is Patwa ki haveli. It is a five-storey structure and sits proudly in a narrow street.
Patwa was a rich trader of jewellery and fine brocades in 1800s. He ordered the construction of separate storey for each of his five sons. These were completed in a span of 60 years. All five houses were constructed during the period 1800 - 1860.
Patwa ki haveli is well known for its beautiful latticework on its porticos made of stone and wood. There is a stunning apartment in it, which is flawlessly painted with beautiful murals. The haveli is renowned for its ornate wall paintings, intricate yellow sandstone-carved jharokhas or balconies, gateways and doorways.
