Artist's Description

Rukmini Devi Arundale (1904 – 1986), was an Indian theosophist, dancer and choreographer of the Indian classical dance form of Bharathanatyam and an activist for animal welfare.

She has been credited with reviving the traditional Bharathanatyam dance form in India.

In 1936, she along with her husband, established Kalakshetra, an academy of dance and music, built around the ancient Indian Gurukul system at Adyar, Chennai. Today, the academy is a deemed university under the Kalakshetra Foundation and is situated in its new 100-acre campus in Tiruvanmiyur, Chennai.

In 1994, an Act of Indian Parliament recognized the Kalakshetra Foundation as an ‘Institute of National Importance’.

She is the recipient of several awards and honors including the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India.

She was nominated as a member of the Indian Parliament’s Council of States (the Rajya Sabha) in 1952 and re-nominated in 1956. She was the first Indi...

The urge to sketch, draw and paint has been there since childhood and I loved every minute of the time spent on drawing and painting. But, to take up painting as a full time career, was considered nothing short of fiddling on the roof. And maybe, in some sense it is true, particularly when there are practicalities of life to deal with. After two decades of a "real" job as a banker, I decided to quit banking and follow my heart, finally. This time I studied art from the Israeli artist Hagit Shahal, for four years, while I was living in Israel. I have not looked back since. Now I paint full time and I currently live in Mumbai, India.
