Ellora caves in Aurangabad represent the epitome of India's rock-cut architecture. There are 34 caves which have essentially been excavated from the hills. They were built between 6th to 9th century AD. The first 12 caves are Buddhist temples, 13th to 29th caves are Hindu temples and 30th to 34th caves represent Jain temples.
Kailash temple in the 16th cave is a magnificent two-storeyed temple complex and incredibly, this beautiful structure was carved out of one single rock.
"The Kailasha is a great monolithic rock cut temple isolated from the surrounding rock and excavated from top to bottom and scooped out all through from outside to inside. It is said that ten generations worked for it and took more than 200 years for its completion", reads an inscription by Archaeological Survey of India at the entrance to the temple.
