Bharathanatyam is a classical dance form that has originated in Tamil Nadu, India. The word Bha-ra-tha-natyam combines 'Bhavam' meaning expression, 'raagam' meaning music, 'thalam' meaning rhythm and 'natyam' meaning dance.
My dance series on Bharathanatyam was conceived a few years back. It was at the back of my mind for quite a while, to explore its grace and beauty through my brush.
But what made it possible to give a tangible form to the idea, was a young dancer friend, who kindly consented to actually show me the dance movements, in full dance costume and permitted me to take hundreds of photographs. The almost sculptural pauses and poses that characterize the dance form are fleeting, haunting, compelling.
These photographs, then, were used as reference to create this series. I have remained authentic to the dance form as far as the poses are concerned. All the...
About Uma Krishnamoorthy
The urge to sketch, draw and paint has been there since childhood and I loved every minute of the time spent on drawing and painting. But, to take up painting as a full time career, was considered nothing short of fiddling on the roof. And maybe, in some sense it is true, particularly when there are practicalities of life to deal with. After two decades of a "real" job as a banker, I decided to quit banking and follow my heart, finally. This time I studied art from the Israeli artist Hagit Shahal, for four years, while I was living in Israel. I have not looked back since. Now I paint full time and I currently live in Mumbai, India.
