Artist's Description

Lata Mangeshkar (born on 28 September 1929) is one of the best known and most respected playback singers in India.

Recipient of numerous awards and honors, in a musical career spanning nearly eight decades, she was awarded the “Bharat Ratna”, India’s highest civilian honor, in 2001.

In this charcoal drawing, I have attempted to capture something of her spirit when she was very young.

The urge to sketch, draw and paint has been there since childhood and I loved every minute of the time spent on drawing and painting. But, to take up painting as a full time career, was considered nothing short of fiddling on the roof. And maybe, in some sense it is true, particularly when there are practicalities of life to deal with. After two decades of a "real" job as a banker, I decided to quit banking and follow my heart, finally. This time I studied art from the Israeli artist Hagit Shahal, for four years, while I was living in Israel. I have not looked back since. Now I paint full time and I currently live in Mumbai, India.
