The Sun temple, dedicated to “Surya” or the sun is located at Modhera Village of Mehsana district, Gujarat, India.
It was built in the early 11th Century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a protected monument maintained by Archaeological Survey of India. The whole temple has an awe-inspiring architecture with detailed, intricate carvings that are breathtakingly beautiful.
This ink drawing captures the entrance to the temple, called the “Sabhamandapa”. It is an octagonal hall with magnificently carved pillars depicting scenes from Indian mythology. In the olden days, it is said that this hall was used for public functions – religious or otherwise like councils, performances or public meetings.
The urge to sketch, draw and paint has been there since childhood and I loved every minute of the time spent on drawing and painting. But, to take up painting as a full time career, was considered nothing short of fiddling on the roof. And maybe, in some sense it is true, particularly when there are practicalities of life to deal with. After two decades of a "real" job as a banker, I decided to quit banking and follow my heart, finally. This time I studied art from the Israeli artist Hagit Shahal, for four years, while I was living in Israel. I have not looked back since. Now I paint full time and I currently live in Mumbai, India.
