The Art Society of India had organized a plein air painting tour at Devrukh, Sangameshwar and Ratnagiri – all on the Western Ghats of India. A few artists including me, participated in this tour.
At Sangameshwar, there is an ancient Shiva temple, overlooking the vast Sahyadri mountain ranges.
At the entrance to Shiva temple, as in most Shiva temples, is Nandi, the Bull. Nandi is considered Shiva’s vehicle.
Nandi is a symbolism of eternal waiting, patience, receptivity, an alert meditative listening without anticipation or expectation of any kind.
This was painted on location with the sunlight outlining Nandi’s form.
The urge to sketch, draw and paint has been there since childhood and I loved every minute of the time spent on drawing and painting. But, to take up painting as a full time career, was considered nothing short of fiddling on the roof. And maybe, in some sense it is true, particularly when there are practicalities of life to deal with. After two decades of a "real" job as a banker, I decided to quit banking and follow my heart, finally. This time I studied art from the Israeli artist Hagit Shahal, for four years, while I was living in Israel. I have not looked back since. Now I paint full time and I currently live in Mumbai, India.
