The Art Society of India had organized a plein air painting tour at Devrukh, Sangameshwar and Ratnagiri in the Konkan region in India. A few artists including me, participated in this tour.
Ratnagiri is a port city on the Arabian Sea coast. It has a flourishing fishing industry. Thousands of boats carry out fishing activities everyday. As can be expected, there was a great deal of hustle and bustle and general commotion, yet the waters of the sea looked calm and reflective and the boats were so colorful.
I chose a spot where the fishing boats were anchored but soon I was trying not to feel frustrated with the dynamic activity that was going on all the time, with boats moving out and new ones taking their place, altering the scene completely. “Fishing boats in Ratnagiri” had to be painted quickly, to capture the essence of what lay before me.
The urge to sketch, draw and paint has been there since childhood and I loved every minute of the time spent on drawing and painting. But, to take up painting as a full time career, was considered nothing short of fiddling on the roof. And maybe, in some sense it is true, particularly when there are practicalities of life to deal with. After two decades of a "real" job as a banker, I decided to quit banking and follow my heart, finally. This time I studied art from the Israeli artist Hagit Shahal, for four years, while I was living in Israel. I have not looked back since. Now I paint full time and I currently live in Mumbai, India.
