"Kathputli" translated into English means a Puppet. Kathputli as an art form, that is native to Rajasthan, is the most popular form of Puppetry in India.
These puppets are made out of wood, cotton cloth and metal wire. This art tradition is believed to be more than thousand years old. Tradition of Kathputli is based on folk tales and stories. It has become an integral part of Rajasthani culture. No village fair, no religious festival and no social gathering in Rajasthan can be complete without the Kathputlis. Historically, these puppets were not only a source of entertainment, but also provided moral and social education.
The urge to sketch, draw and paint has been there since childhood and I loved every minute of the time spent on drawing and painting. But, to take up painting as a full time career, was considered nothing short of fiddling on the roof. And maybe, in some sense it is true, particularly when there are practicalities of life to deal with. After two decades of a "real" job as a banker, I decided to quit banking and follow my heart, finally. This time I studied art from the Israeli artist Hagit Shahal, for four years, while I was living in Israel. I have not looked back since. Now I paint full time and I currently live in Mumbai, India.
