Description
A group of us visited a small town called Bundi in Rajasthan, to paint 'en plein air'. It is a town that has the remnants of the past - its forts and palaces and step wells - they all give glimpses of the grandeur of the past even to a casual visitor. The past haunts the place at every street corner and every turn one takes, the architecture is breathtaking at times and some of it is in ruins, sadly.
The town itself lives in its languid pace, the weather in early February is cold and chilly during early mornings and late evenings, while the days are warm and windy. Through the day, we all painted choosing different spots and found some interesting paintings by the end of day.
This is the garden at the entrance to Raniji ki Vav.
Raniji Ki Vav is a step well. Step wells are wells in which the water may be reached by descending a set of steps. Step wells were common in western India. They were used to store rain water. They were also a place for social gatherings and religious ceremonies. Most of these step wells are intricately carved. Today, many of them are in ruins and serve more as a tourist attraction.
