Artist's Description

The colorful sarees, which form a beautiful pattern, are left to dry on the clothes lines of Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai.

Dhobi ghat is an open air laundromat in Mumbai. The dhobis (washers) work in the open to wash the clothes from Mumbai's hotels and hospitals.

The photograph has been digitally retouched using Photoshop CS6.

Uma Krishnamoorthy

The urge to sketch, draw and paint has been there since childhood and I loved every minute of the time spent on drawing and painting. But, to take up painting as a full time career, was considered nothing short of fiddling on the roof. And maybe, in some sense it is true, particularly when there are practicalities of life to deal with. After two decades of a "real" job as a banker, I decided to quit banking and follow my heart, finally. This time I studied art from the Israeli artist Hagit Shahal, for four years, while I was living in Israel. I have not looked back since. Now I paint full time and I currently live in Mumbai, India.
