Description
My Bhutan series, gives you a glimpse of what I saw and experienced during my travel to Bhutan.
The tiny Himalayan kingdom is doing something so right that I thought that it deserves to be highlighted, hence this series.
Bhutan has shown the rest of the world that it is possible to care for the environment, conserve and protect nature, have a net zero greenhouse gas emissions and breathe in fresh air at all times.
The country has a national policy to have at least 60% of the area under forest cover at all times. Presently it has an area of 72% under forest cover. By having such a policy they have been able to mainstream the concern for the environment. They see it as their responsibility to the future generations.
To live in harmony with nature is an every day reality In Bhutan.
Bhutan has the unique distinction of measuring Gross National Happiness of its people, thus laying emphasis on what matters most to it as a nation. Bhutan clearly wanted a more holistic measure about the quality of life of its citizens than what GDP alone can convey.
Is Bhutan a Utopia or simply a nation on our map like any other ? A real nation that is willing to walk the talk ?
"What we need are alternative horizons that spark the imagination. And I do mean horizons in the plural; conflicting utopias are the lifeblood of democracy, after all."

Uma Krishnamoorthy replied:
It is believed in Bhutan that when these flags flutter in the breeze, the prayers and the goodwill spread all over the land. That is why they are tied high in mountains or at least on roof tops.
